We are the only fulltime processor in the Athens to Logan area that cuts the deer by hand and you get back only your deer. Something like 20,000 acres in that area to hunt. I think the state did buy a big section of that. Also look at the Sunday creek coal company land. Good luck to you and it would be worth the trip!! Look at the Perry county Wayne national area too. No, it was not found in wild deer but that is your state laws with Ohio having a confirmed case. And if you get the big boy he can not go back with any brain or spine matter. You will need to find a processor ( or do it yourself) that cuts them by hand so no spine or bone dust from the spine is in/on your deer. Don't forget you will now need to have your deer cut before you take them back to VT. Burr Oak and Lake Hope lodge are nice places to stay but are a bit out if the way for going out to eat or getting groceries. I just caped one today that came in and had 7" bases. There are still plenty of big bucks out there. If you are looking for cabins, up our way (Logan) will have more than any other place. If you go with a level head and take in your surroundings and enjoy hunting a new part of the country, you will have a great time. I don't want to cone off here like a dink, I just wanted to let you know my experiences. These guys even hauled a chest freezer down with them for all the meat they were gona bring home. Out of the 4 of them one guy saw one deer. The problem was they got way back in and still ran into hunters. Last year a group of 4 came down for gun season. I have known a couple groups of hunters that have come down from VT thinking they are going to slaughter the deer. I have definitely seen the decline in numbers. I have had plenty of all day sits where I didn't see a single deer. I learned quickly that just because there are a lot more deer here than VT doesn't make it easy. We only hunt it for a 10 day period out of the whole year. I have had some great years here and some horrible years and we hunt all private land with only 4 people that have permission. I hunt in November so its a very different time of year that late ml, but the one thing I would stress to you is that if your groups expectations are to go home with a pile of deer with all or most tags filled, its probably not going to happen. I have been hunting OH for I think 10 years now.
